However, according to Madrid have not yet bowed out of the race. The Liga giants are said to be weighing a late attempt to hijack the deal, with the club still looking to reinforce their midfield for the next campaign. Since there has been no official agreement signed between Arsenal and Sociedad, Madrid’s interest introduces uncertainty to what was being seen as a straightforward move for the Gunners.

Madrid are currently surveying a number of midfield options as part of their broader recruitment strategy. Alongside Zubimendi, the club has been linked with a quartet of high-profile names. These include Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister, Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes, and Ederson from Atalanta. The diversity of targets shows Madrid’s intent to refresh and bolster their midfield depth ahead of the new season, particularly with Luka Modric nearing the twilight of their career. A key figure pushing Zubimendi’s name at Madrid is former Sociedad B boss Xabi Alonso, who is set to take over from Carlo Ancelotti. He has previously coached the midfielder and maintains a strong admiration for his qualities.
Manchester City star Rodri is also on their radar and they will have an eye on him at the Club World Cup to see scrutinise his condition following a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
