Tottenham Hotspur rejected a Deadline Day swoop from Turkish outfit Galatasaray for out-of-sorts striker Vincent Janssen, the player’s agent told ESPN.
What’s the word?
Arriving for £17m from AZ Alkmaar in the summer, Vincent Janssen has struggled to make a positive impression at White Hart Lane and is still yet to find a goal in open play, with all of his four goals coming from the penalty spot.
Featuring 23 times this season, Janssen has fallen down the pecking order in the eyes of Mauricio Pochettino and has been left out of Spurs squad for the past three Premier League matches- but he did score from the spot against League Two Wycombe Wanderers in the FA Cup.
Despite showing the sort of form that leads him as a contender to be dubbed the worst Premier League signing of the year, Spurs refused to approve an exit for the 23-year-old amidst interest from Turkish outfit Galatasaray- who wanted the Dutchman on-loan.
What was said?
Speaking to ESPN FC, Janssen’s agent Louis Laros said:
“Absolutely not happening! Janssen is not joining Galatasaray, they may want him but he is not leaving. Janssen will of course stay at Tottenham, he is not going anywhere.”
Right decision?
Despite Janssen failing to hit a barn door in the Premier League and last starting a league game at the end of November, blocking an exit for Vincent Janssen was the right move from Tottenham Hotspur as they lack alternatives to star-man Harry Kane.
Should Kane be injured, Janssen will be thrust into the limelight once again and rotation in the second-half of the season, due to Spurs’ continued involvement in European football, will see Janssen earn further opportunities.
It would also have been unwise to cut ties with a player who cost £17m just half a season ago, especially if that man was the Eredivisie’s top-scorer last season and is still just 23-years-old.
